The Bainbridge Island Museum of Art not only has the art, but it also has the artists. The BIMA Eye on Artist lecture series began earlier in the month with a lecture by the museum’s architect Matthew Coates. This Tuesday, August 27, the series continues with a lecture by George and David Lewis, the landscape artists who designed the museum’s rooftop garden.
The garden is a “riverscape” of rocks, sustainable plantings, and concrete boulders made by the artists, who donated their time and talents to the project. Collaborators since 1992, the Lewises are the authors of A Garden Gallery: The Plants, Art and Hardscape of Little and Lewis, which was awarded the Silver Medal for Best Garden Book of 2006 by the Garden Writer’s Association. In 2007, they were named Island Treasures by Bainbridge Island Arts and Humanities. The artists, who have turned their property into a showcase of their design and garden sculpture, were featured in 2011 by Martha Stewart on her television show.
In September, the museum will be presenting Barbara Helen Berger, the Bainbridge artist and illustrator, and artist Margie McDonald, both currently featured in BIMA exhibits. In addition, BIMA will hold a panel discussion with the curators of the museum’s First Light Regional Group Exhibition.
The George and David Lewis lecture begins in the BIMA Auditorium at 550 Winslow Way East Tuesday evening at 6:30 and runs until 8. The event will be followed by a reception with light food and beverages. Advance registration is required, at $5 with a $1.17 processing fee. Click here to register. Seating is limited.
